Business Alum Hits it Out of the Park

Matt Massarelli ’18 has gone from an internship with the Philadelphia Flyers to designing iconic pieces for Major League Baseball, including this year’s Home Run Derby Chain, created to celebrate Philadelphia and America’s 250th anniversary.

Massarelli, who owns his design firm, Matt Massarelli Design LLC, was in his senior year at Jefferson in 2017-2018 when he landed the internship with the Flyers as a graphics intern. After graduation he went to work full time for Major League Baseball, a move he says was a dream come true for a kid who played baseball from the ages of 5 to 18.

He credits much of his success to the University’s emphasis on cross collaboration, and a multidisciplinary approach to education and entrepreneurial thinking.

“TJU gave me the confidence to seek out roles like these and pursue my true passions,” he says. “I learned a lot about being a self-starter and about entrepreneurship.”

In 2021, Massarelli was called on to design the Home Run Derby Chain for the MLB event held in Denver. He says he was thrilled to have the opportunity to do it again this year, alongside fellow designers John Luongo and Kenny Hwang. The piece features a striking bell design and 250 mixed-cut rubies. “And yes,” Massarelli adds, “it actually rings!”

Now living in New York City, Massarelli uses the term “full circle” to describe his return to Philadelphia for the assignment.

“I feel like my time in Philadelphia was paramount to being able to design a piece such as this. There are so many callbacks to the city and its place in baseball and American history throughout.”
